♌ Leo New Moon: Leading from the heart
This is no ordinary New Moon. On Wednesday 12 August, we have a Total Solar Eclipse in Leo and, with it, we step more deeply into a new chapter of Eclipse stories across the Leo/Aquarius axis.
New Moons are usually moments of renewal. The Sun and Moon come together and we talk about planting seeds, setting intentions and consciously beginning again. But Eclipses flip that script.
They can bring changes, revelations and turning points that we haven't necessarily planned for ourselves. Rather than deciding exactly what should happen next, Eclipse season asks us to become more observant.
What’s changing? What’s being revealed?
And perhaps most importantly: What might we need to release before the next chapter can properly begin?
What is a Solar Eclipse?
Let's make the Astronomy bit really simple. A Solar Eclipse can only happen at a New Moon, and a Lunar Eclipse can only happen at a Full Moon.
Normally, at a New Moon, the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, but the three aren't perfectly lined up, so nothing particularly dramatic happens in the sky. An Eclipse happens when the New Moon occurs close to one of the Lunar Nodes (the points where the paths of the Sun and Moon cross) allowing the Sun, Moon and Earth to line up much more closely.
During a Solar Eclipse, the Moon moves across the face of the Sun from our perspective here on Earth. For those standing in the path of a Total Solar Eclipse, the Moon can completely cover the Sun for a few extraordinary minutes.
Day temporarily becomes darkness. Astrologically, that's powerfully symbolic.
The Sun — our source of light, visibility, vitality, energy and conscious direction — is temporarily obscured. The normal order of things is interrupted.
This is why Eclipses have traditionally been associated with turning points, revelations, reversals and redirections.
Something we couldn't previously see may become more obvious. Something we thought was going one way may take an unexpected turn.
Sometimes, something has to leave before there’s room for what comes next. That doesn't mean we need to fear Eclipses or assume something dramatic is going to happen to us. It simply means that this isn't necessarily the moment to grip the steering wheel more tightly and insist that life follows our carefully constructed plan.
It may be wiser to watch, listen, and allow the story to unfold.
Eclipse Season — reflect rather than force
Eclipses can carry an intensity that stretches beyond the actual day of the Eclipse.
We’re currently in an Eclipse ‘season’, with another Eclipse following later this month, so we may already feel that events, emotions or circumstances are moving more quickly — or less predictably — than usual. For that reason, I wouldn't suggest elaborate manifestation rituals around this New Moon.
There’s already plenty happening. We don't necessarily need to add more! Instead, create some quiet space and notice what life is showing you.
What are you beginning to understand? What might you need to stop forcing? What are you ready to leave behind?
At the very least, journal, if you don’t already! Write down what's happening in your life now — conversations, feelings, opportunities, frustrations, endings, beginnings and ideas that seem significant. You don't have to understand them yet.
Six months, a year or several years from now, you may look back and realise: “Ahhh… that's where that story began.”
Eclipse cycles: Look back to look forward?
As the Lunar Nodes move through the Zodiac, Eclipses occur in cycles across particular pairs of Signs, usually bringing those areas of our lives (the Houses in your Birth Chart) into focus for around 18 months to two years.
We’re now transitioning into a new chapter involving the Leo/Aquarius axis. These two Signs explore the relationship between the individual and the collective.
Leo asks: Who am I? What comes from my heart? How do I shine?
Aquarius asks: Where do I belong? How does my individuality contribute to something bigger?
There are also longer Eclipse rhythms. Look back approximately 8–9 years as a halfway point, and then 19 years. You may recognise echoes of themes that are becoming relevant again now — particularly in the areas of life represented by Leo and Aquarius in your Birth Chart.
This doesn't mean the same things will happen again. You aren't the same person you were 9 or 19 years ago.
Instead, consider what was changing in your life then. What plot twists occurred? Where were you being asked to become more yourself?
And perhaps most interestingly: What do you understand now that you couldn't possibly have understood then?
The repetition isn't necessarily asking us to relive the past. It may be showing us how much wisdom we've gained since then.
Leo Solar Eclipse: Who is leading your life?
Leo is the Fixed Fire Sign ruled by the Sun — the radiant centre of our solar system and the great symbol of vitality, identity, creativity and heart. And this is particularly significant because this Eclipse is happening in the Sun's own Sign.
The Sun isn't simply involved in this Eclipse. The Sun rules it.
Think about what the physical Sun does for us every single day. Our world revolves around it. It gives us light and warmth. Its rising and setting creates our experience of day and night. Its journey through the year marks our seasons. Everything in our solar system is organised around this enormous central source of energy.
Symbolically, the Sun asks similar questions of us: What’s at the centre of my life? What gives me energy? What makes me feel alive? What’s in my heart? Who’s actually leading my life?
Leadership: Collective and personal
One of the bigger themes of this Eclipse is leadership. Collectively, we may find ourselves questioning what leadership actually means. We can become tired of old structures, old stories, outdated paradigms and old ways of holding power. We may want leaders to be more accountable. But rejecting an old model is only part of the process.
We also have to ask: What do we want instead? What does authentic leadership look like? What qualities do we expect from people who hold responsibility? And what needs to change before a different kind of leadership can emerge?
But before we become too preoccupied with how everybody else is leading, Leo turns the question back on us: How are you leading your own life? Where have you handed your authority to somebody else? Where are you waiting for permission? Where are you allowing somebody else's expectations to determine what happens next? And where might ego be keeping you attached to something that your heart already knows it’s outgrown?
Leo has a magnificent capacity for warmth, courage, generosity and creative self-expression.
But every Sign has its shadow. Leo can become so focused on its own storyline that it forgets everyone else is living one too. It can perform rather than simply be, seeking recognition or validation and mistaking being noticed for being valued.
This Eclipse may expose some of the places where we have been performing an identity rather than genuinely living it. Perhaps you've held onto a role because you're known for it and enjoy that kudos. Perhaps you've been trying to prove yourself. Or perhaps you've become so accustomed to being who other people expect you to be that you've forgotten to ask whether that person is still really You.
This is where Leo's greatest wisdom lies. Authenticity doesn't need an audience.
The strongest leaders don't demand respect. They earn it through kindness, honesty and integrity. They know their own worth without needing to diminish somebody else's. They take responsibility for their choices whilst respecting the needs and autonomy of others. They allow the heart — rather than ego — to lead the way.
So this Eclipse also asks: What needs to leave my story so I can become a more authentic author of it?

For those of you who enjoy working with the energetic symbolism of the Lionsgate period around 8 August, there’s an interesting progression this year. Think of Lionsgate as an invitation to connect with the life your heart genuinely desires.
Then, just a few days later, the Leo Solar Eclipse asks: What would you need to change, release or take responsibility for in order to actually live it?
Dreaming about a different life is one thing. Choosing to become the person capable of living it is another.
And perhaps the first step isn't adding something new. It’s letting something old go.
Planetary influences: What's shaping this Eclipse
There’s still this year’s buzzing mix of Fire and Air energy around this Eclipse.
Fire inspires. Air communicates. Together they can create ideas, enthusiasm and movement — but also a lot of noise. So amongst everything moving around us, the challenge is recognising what actually matters.
Jupiter & Mercury in Leo: Finding the courage to speak
Jupiter and Mercury add even more emphasis to Leo. Mercury brings our thoughts, conversations and words into the picture, while Jupiter encourages us to find meaning and wisdom through our experiences. There can be something enormously powerful about finding the words for what your heart already knows. Speak honestly. Share what matters.
But remember: speaking your truth isn't the same as assuming yours is the only truth in the room.
Venus in Libra: Relationship, beauty, and balance
Venus has just entered Libra, one of the Signs she rules, bringing attention to relationships, fairness, connection and harmony. She offers an important counterbalance to all that Leo energy: How can I be fully myself whilst remaining meaningfully connected to others?
Authenticity doesn't require us to stop considering other people. It means finding connection without abandoning ourselves.

Saturn Retrograde in Aries and Mars in Cancer are both operating in territory that isn't particularly comfortable for them.
Saturn asks us to take responsibility for our actions, while Mars in Cancer can become fiercely protective of what — and who — it’s passionate about. Together, they ask us to rise to the occasion. Not every battle needs fighting. But when something genuinely matters, what are you willing to stand up for, protect or take responsibility for?

With Uranus in Gemini and Pluto in Aquarius, there’s still the potential for rapid changes in ideas, information, communities and collective thinking. Plans may not unfold exactly as expected. Leo eclipses have a habit of asking a sharper question than most transits: not what you're doing, but who you're doing it as. This one lands in the Sign built for self-expression, and it tends to bring anything performed rather than lived into full view — the roles you've worn so long they started to pass for identity.
What follows traces where that can lead: the pull toward living your truth more plainly, a steadier hand on your own direction, the letting go of what's outgrown its use, and the flexibility to change course when life insists on it.

How to honour this Solar Eclipse
This is an Eclipse. You don't have to do anything dramatic. In fact, doing less may allow you to notice more.
Observe: Pay attention to what's changing around you and within you. Don't rush to label something as good or bad. Give the story time to reveal itself.
Journal and reflect: Record what's happening now, even if you don't yet understand its significance. You might also look back 8–9 years and then 19 years and notice any recurring themes around identity, visibility, leadership, creativity, belonging or direction. Look for echoes rather than expecting repetition.
Release rather than force: Rather than creating a huge list of things you want to manifest, consider what you are willing to stop carrying. An outdated identity. An expectation. A need for approval. A story about who you're supposed to be.
And then ask yourself: What makes me feel genuinely alive rather than simply looking impressive from the outside?
Create the space first. Let what belongs in that space reveal itself later.

Let the heart lead
A Solar Eclipse in Leo temporarily darkens the very light that normally shows us the way. And there’s wisdom in that.
Sometimes we need the familiar light to disappear for a moment before we realise we have been following the wrong beacon. Sometimes we need the plan to change. Sometimes an identity has to loosen before something more authentic can emerge. And sometimes leadership begins not with knowing exactly where we are going, but with having enough courage to admit that the old direction no longer feels true.
So don't rush to fill the darkness. Don't force the next chapter.
Watch. Listen. Reflect. Write it down. And when the light returns, notice what looks different.
