What is a Birth Chart?
A Birth Chart, also called a Natal Chart, is a map of the sky at the exact time and place you were born. It shows where the Sun, the Moon and each Planet sat among the twelve Zodiac Signs, and how they fall across the twelve Houses of your life.
Astrology reads that map as a set of patterns, offering a language for understanding how you tend to think and respond. What you do with that insight is yours to choose.
How to read your Birth Chart
Start with your Big Three. These Placements carry the most weight, and together they give a rounded first picture of who you are.
Your Sun Sign: Your Sun Sign is the one most people know. It points to your core sense of purpose and where you want to shine.
Your Moon Sign: Your Moon Sign reflects your emotional needs and what helps you feel at home. Many people relate to their Moon Sign more closely than their Sun Sign, which is often why a horoscope doesn't quite fit.
Your Rising Sign: Your Rising Sign, or Ascendant, is the Sign that was rising on the eastern horizon as you were born. It describes the lens you meet the world through, and in Whole Sign Astrology it also sets the order of your Houses.
The Planets
Each Planet in your Birth Chart describes a different part of you. Its Sign shows how that energy tends to express itself, and its House shows where in life it shows up. The faster personal Planets are the most individual to you. The slower outer Planets spend years in each Sign, so they describe themes you share with your generation.
Mercury: How you think and communicate
Venus: Love and what you value
Mars: Drive, and how you go after what you want
Jupiter: Growth, and where you look for meaning
Saturn: Structure and long-term commitment
Uranus: Change and fresh thinking
Neptune: Imagination and intuition
Pluto: Transformation and personal power
Astrological Houses
The 12 Houses divide your Birth Chart into areas of life, from home and family to career and friendship. A Planet's House shows where its energy tends to show up.
Our generator uses Whole Sign Houses, one of the oldest House systems, used by Hellenistic astrologers more than 2,000 years ago. Your Rising Sign is your 1st House, the next Sign is your 2nd House, and so on around the wheel. It's clear and easy to learn from.
1st House: Self and identity
2nd House: Resources and values
3rd House: Communication and local life
4th House: Home and roots
5th House: Creativity and play
6th House: Routines and wellbeing
7th House: Partnership
8th House: Intimacy and shared resources
9th House: Travel and belief
10th House: Career and reputation
11th House: Friendship and community
12th House: Rest and the unseen
Your Birth Moon Phase
The Phase of the Moon at your birth adds another layer to your Moon Sign. Each of the eight Phases, from New Moon to Balsamic Moon, carries its own rhythm. Moon cycles and Phases explained
Black Moon Lilith
Black Moon Lilith marks the part of you that refuses to be tamed. Her Sign and House show where that raw, reclaimed energy surfaces in your life. What is Black Moon Lilith?
Chiron and the Nodes
Chiron points to where old hurts can turn into wisdom you share with others. The North and South Nodes describe the path you're growing towards and the familiar ground you're moving on from.
The asteroid goddesses
Ceres, Pallas Athena, Juno and Vesta add detail around nurture, strategy, commitment and devotion. Switch them on above the chart to see where they sit.
Current Transits
Transits show where today's Planets are moving through your Houses, which keeps your Birth Chart a living map. Come back any time to see what's moving through yours.
Why your birth time matters
Your Rising Sign changes roughly every two hours, and the Moon moves through a whole Sign in about two and a half days. An accurate birth time makes your Houses and Rising Sign reliable.
In the UK, Scottish birth certificates record the time of birth. In England and Wales, a time is usually only recorded for twins and other multiple births, so family records or hospital notes are worth a look.
No time at all? The generator still works, using midday, and tells you which parts of your chart need a birth time.
How accurate is this Birth Chart generator?
Planetary positions are calculated with Astronomy Engine, an open-source astronomy library, and checked against the Swiss Ephemeris used by professional astrologers. The Planets agree to within one arcminute, a sixtieth of a degree.
Historic time zones are built in too, including the years of all-year British Summer Time and Double Summer Time during the Second World War. Your details stay on your device: nothing you enter is stored or sent to us.

Your Birth Chart is more than a list of Placements. The real insight lives in how your Planets talk to each other, and in the Transits moving through your chart right now. In an Astrology Reading with Stars & Signs, we look at the bigger pattern together and bring it back to what’s happening in your life. You’ll leave with a clearer sense of where you are, and how you might want to move with it.

Yes. You can create as many Birth Charts as you like, for yourself and the people you love, with no account needed.
-
There isn't one. Birth Chart and Natal Chart both describe the same map of the sky at your birth.
-
You'll still see your Sun Sign, most of your Planets and your Moon Sign, which is shown at its midday position. Your Rising Sign and Houses need a birth time, so they're left out until you have one.

There are several ways of dividing a Birth Chart into Houses, and many websites use the Placidus system. Stars & Signs uses Whole Sign Houses, where each House lines up with one whole Zodiac Sign, starting from your Rising Sign. Placidus Houses come in uneven sizes and can start partway through a Sign. That means a Planet can sit in, say, your 10th House here and your 9th House elsewhere. Both systems are valid. We work with Whole Sign because it’s one of the oldest House systems and one of the easiest to read. If anything else differs, such as your Rising Sign, check that the birth time and place match on both sites.

An empty House simply has no Planets in it, and everyone has some, because there are more Houses than Planets. That area of life still matters. Look to the Sign on the House and where its ruling Planet sits for more detail.

Rx marks a Planet that was Retrograde when you were born, meaning it appeared to move backwards from Earth’s point of view. Natal Retrograde Planets often point to energy that’s turned inwards, worked through privately before it’s expressed.
